Reducing a Driving Ban & Other Benefits

Once convicted of a drink driving offence many questions can come to mind:

  • Is there a way of reducing a driving ban?
  • What happens to my car insurance after a drink driving ban?
  • What happens about my job?

Fortunately, we appreciate that there are many different circumstances that lead to people being convicted of a drink driving offence.

To that end, all of the LTP Driver Training DVSA approved drink drive rehabilitation courses are conducted in a non-judgmental, supportive environment.

The Courts, having convicted you of an offence involving drinking and driving, may offer you the opportunity to attend a rehabilitation course. A drink drive rehabilitation course is an alternative sentencing option for drink drive offenders.

Our drink drive rehabilitation courses are designed to be educational; covering alcohol education, impact on health, responsible driving, the law, sentencing, and victims. This education is delivered in an interactive manner through knowledge building exercises. There are no difficult exams that you have to complete.

Reducing a Driving Ban

As a convicted drink driver it is worth knowing that attending a drink driving course to reduce a ban can contribute to making the driving ban shorter. Any reduction will be offered to you directly by the sentencing court. Bear in mind that the minimum ban for a drink driving offence is twelve months, i.e. a full year.

If the Court does offer you this option, the driving ban reduction is a minimum of three months, and could even be up to a 25% reduction to the drink driving ban length. This will be entirely up to the Courts to decide.

It goes without saying that, to remain eligible for a Court approved driving ban reduction, you must complete the entire course satisfactorily. And before the completion date that is set by the Court at the time of sentencing.

All course providers are required to report back to the sentencing Court on the attendance and completion of the course by offenders. Additionally, any violation of any of the Terms and Conditions may result in a Non Completion Certificate being issued to the Court.

Got You Covered specialise in finding insurance for people with any driving offences on their driving record. For example the phrase ‘DR10 insurance’ is associated with car insurance after a drink driving ban as the DR10 part refers to the type of driving offence that has been committed. They also specialise in finding insurance for people with any offence codes on their driving record, such as DR20, DR30 and so on.

Additionally, completing a course could help you get a better insurance quote with other insurance companies that look more favourably on customers who can show they have a certificate of completion.

Other Benefits

There are many benefits to be gained from attending the course. Aside from reducing your drink driving ban length and lowering car insurance after a drink driving ban costs, an enormous one is to reduce the chance of a person committing another drink driving offence in the future.

Research linked to the drink driving awareness courses shows that after six years, 17% of offenders who did not attend a course were prosecuted again for drink driving. This is in comparison to only 7% of those who did attend and complete the course reoffending.

The reduction in the length of a ban for some can mean the difference between an employer holding a job open for you, or firing you. Because attending a course shows commitment and taking responsibility for your actions, they may even change your job role until your ban ends.

Attending a course may help get you back to work sooner. Or simply help your social life, economical well being and emotional well being.

If you have been offered the opportunity to attend the course by the sentencing Court, the Court and the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) will provide you with the details of the course providers in your area.

Because LTP Driver Training covers all of England and Scotland with our online courses we are always local to you. The choice of which drink driving rehabilitation course provider you want to use is entirely up to you.

You can even make this choice before going to Court by asking the Court usher or your solicitor to refer you to LTP Driver Training. When we receive your referral from Court we will take you through the process of booking, what the course covers and how to attend your chosen course.
